"Come Home for Christmas" --Courthouse Lighting

“COME HOME FOR CHRISTMAS”
 Friday, November 25 beginning at 5:30 pm in Downtown Greenville. The evening will begin with carolers leading a procession around the square to light the shop windows and the large Daniken Christmas tree on the courthouse lawn. Santa and Mrs Claus will arrive on the Trolley just in time to light the big tree and then the ceremony will be turned over to the Greenville Women's club so that they can present the lighting of the Courthouse. The Courthouse has been dark for more than a decade but will be re-lit this year due to the determined vision of the Women's Club. After all the lights are lit, Santa and Mrs. Claus will go to the Globe Theater so that all the children can visit with them.

This year's event features a non-profit Christmas Tree Auction Wonderland which consists of 7-10 trees to be creatively decorated by The Garden Club, the High School Sophomore class, the Senior Center, Our Common Ground, the Food Pantry, The Humane Society, the Boy Scouts, a Relay for Life Team, and the Junior Comets Football team. The silent auction will be held in the Turret Building along with live music, a ‪Scherenschnitt papercutting demonstration ‬and food by Martha's Madness. The money from the sale of the trees goes to the participating non-profit organization, with special prizes from the GBPA for the two best trees. The trolley will carry passengers to the various venues around town which will include a live nativity and toy train display at the United Methodist Church on 2nd St. It will make it's way around every 15-20 minutes. It should be a magical evening for children and adults with fun things to see and participate in all along the way.

GREENVILLE COLLEGE HOMECOMING PARADE – 2011

The Greenville College Homecoming Spirit Parade begins Friday at 4:00 p.m. We spoke with Director of Alumni Relations, Pam Taylor who is excited to be bringing the parade back to the area. There has not been a Homecoming Spirit Parade for several years, possibly since the 1960’s. There will be a pep band and a small marching band, as well as the Greenville High School marching band. The parade begins at the United Methodist Church parking lot on Second Street and travels north to College Avenue. The parade will then travel east on College, north on Eastern Avenue, and then west on Oak Street before returning to campus for a pep rally on Scott Field. The Greenville College Choir will be in concert

at the Whitlock Music Center
on the Greenville College campus.

The concert will be the first event of the college choir’s 85th anniversary reunion and part of the college’s homecoming festivities. The choir consists of 42 undergraduate students from various fields of liberal arts study. As the flagship choral ensemble of Greenville College, the choir presents as many as twenty off-campus performances each year as part of its annual tour. May 7, 2011 -- "I Remember Mama" a 1940s themed community event honoring all of our mothers. Bring an apron to hang on the clothesline around the courthouse, with a memory of your mother written on an index card. Apron registration, $1.00 to benefit the lighting of the courthouse.

1940s-50s music and a dance from 6-8 pm in the street.

The Our Common Ground Theatre Troupe of Greenville is now in rehearsal for Ayn Rand's Night of January 16th. The play is a gripping drama about the rise and destruction of a brilliant and ruthless man.

On a deeper level, it is a superb dramatic objectification of Ayn Rand's vision of human strength and weakness. Primarily known for her novels, Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, Rand achieved enduring success for her unique philosophy of Objectivism, which gained a worldwide audience.

"Night of January 16th" is a courtroom drama, which will be presented in the main courtroom of the Bond County courthouse, giving the audience all the excitement of a murder trial. The atmosphere will be all the more intimate due to the fact that the courtroom has a seating capacity of 65.

The jury, which will decide the guilt or innocence of the defendant, will be chosen from the audience at the beginning of the play. The verdict should arouse discussion and debate, for the drama's underlying conflict is the basic conflict of two different types of humanity.

Tickets are available at Watson's Drug Store and Adam Bros. Coffee Shop at $10 each.

The public should plan to get their tickets early due to the seating capacity of the courtroom.

The 6th Annual Our Common Ground ArtWalk
The 6th Annual Our Common Ground ArtWalk is slated for Friday, September 17, from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will be held around the historic Greenville Square, in Greenville, IL., featuring more recycled art, and art with a sense of humor.

Christine A. Holtz, will be showing in the Rowland Art Gallery in the Maves Art Center of Greenville College. Christine received her Master of Fine Arts (Fibers Specialization), from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting, Fiber Art), from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Indiana, Pennsylvania. We are most proud to bring her work to the ArtWalk.

Adam Long, of St. Charles, Mo. will be exhibiting his sculptures under the large tent on second Street. Long's environmental art often takes the form of figure sculptures taken from natural and recycled material. Adam was a participant in last year's ArtWalk as well. He'll be sharing the big tent with Mississippi Mudd of Alton.
Also on Second Street will be digital painter, Genece Hamby of Edwardsville, IL.

Ten Talents Gallery & Gifts will be featuring Nicole Otwell, who teaches art at the University of Missouri at Columbia, a fiber artist with an MFA from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, as well as other forms of more traditional fiber arts.

On Main Street, Wine Tastings will be presented by Villa Marie, Piasa, Forsee Vineyards, and Pheasant Hollow Wineries. This year, as a fundraiser, OCG ArtWalk wine glasses and posters will be for sale. The first 50 guests at the wine tasting will receive a free wine glass. To accompany the wine tasting, there will be a cheese tasting by Marcoots Jersey Creamery, and a chocolate tasting by Martha's Madness.

Greenville native, Chef Kevin Willman, owner of Farmhaus in St Louis will return to his hometown with some of his slow-cooked creations. He'll be joined by the Firefly Grill in Effingham, Fond in Edwardsville, 222 Artisan Bakery of Edwardsville, and Chef Jane Muscroft and her famous scones. Jo's Java will be on hand with coffees.

The Synergy Jazz Quintet, Fundamental Elements, and Scratch Track will fill the streets with live music throughout the evening.

The Bradford Community Room will play host to The Kid's Zone, a new venue devoted to children. The Our Common Ground Theater Troupe will perform spontaneously throughout the evening, in unexpected places. Creative Stitchers will display "their favorite quilts" and the Ya Ya Knitters will bring a surprise installation to the square.

The 2010 Heritage Days at the American Farm Heritage Museum will be Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, July 30, 31, and August 1. The events planned for this year are as follows:

Friday -- Four Corner Tractorcade, live music, and food vendors

Friday evening -- draft horse pull, kid's night, live music, and food vendors

Saturday -- tractor pull, field demonstrations, antique fire truck display, small engines display and live music, and food vendors

Other attractions:

Miniature railroad all the way around the venue.

There will be women’s tents, activities such as plowing and thrashing and exhibits of steam engines, a baker fan, and saw mill.

The little red barn will be open all three days.

The 27th Annual Greenville Regional Hospital Auxiliary Book Fair will be Thursday-Saturday, June 17-19 at the Greenville First Christian Church Family Life Center.

Marcoot Jersey Farm and Creamery, located at 526 Dudleyville Road in rural Greenville, is hosting a grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration Saturday, June 5 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The Marcoot Jersey Farm has been producing quality milk for seven generations and now their Jersey milk will be available in the form of farmstead and artisan cheese and ice cream.

PUTTIN ON THE RITZ FOR FRITZ is a building fundraiser kickoff for the Bond County Humane Society. The event is Friday, May 14, 6:30-8:30 PM at First Presbyterian Church 401 N. Idler Lane Greenville. A delicious meal will be served by candlelight with entertainment provided by “Standing Room Only”, an acappella foursome from Bond County Unit 2 High School.

Proceeds from the event will go toward building a shelter for Bond County Humane Society.

MARCOOT CREAMERY IN GREENVILLE

Marcoot Jersey Creamery
After seven generations in the Jersey business, theMarcoot family of Greenville, Illinois is expanding their operation to include a processing facility expected to start production this summer. A facility open house this month attracted over 1,000 area visitors. The finished plant will have rooms for both cheese and bottled fluid products, along with a retail space for on-farm sales.

“The health benefits [of Jersey milk] are a very big marketing tool for us,” said Brittany Marcoot Wheeler. Milk from the herd’s sixty Jersey cows will be used for three different specialty cheeses aged in a cellar, known in the business as a cheese cave, below the plant. Cheese curds and ice cream are also planned, primarily for local consumers.

Peter Dixon, a master cheese maker from Vermont helped the Marcoots get set up and provided cheese recipes. Dixon stated that cheese is an artistic product. "Real cheese looks beautiful" as opposed to factory cheese, it has more flavor because it is a slower process.

The family is also working to develop tour programs for field trips and general public tours.

The evening will culminate with a movie, “Babettes Feast” at the Globe Theatre. This Academy Award-winner for Best Foreign Language Film was a big art house hit in 1987. A highly recommended movie, set in the mid 1800's, it refuses to be modern in any way. Its pace is the pace of a provincial seaside town where nothing much ever happens, and its subject is the lives of characters who have dedicated themselves to very non-21st century lifestyles. The sweetness and humanity brought out from this austere setting make "Babette's Feast" a special and rewarding foreign film. Tickets for the movie will be available at each venue.

Also on the list of things to do: The American Farm Heritage Museum begins their Christmas Light Display Friday November 27th at 5:00 pm.

Our Common Ground presents their Christmas Pops Concert on Sunday night, November 29th 7-9 pm at the First Christian Church, 1100 Killarney Dr. Last year's concert was a great success and this year promises to be even better. The concert includes around an hour of mostly instrumental jazz, blues, gospel, classical, country and more popular Christmas arrangements. Plans are being made to form a Community Mass Choir with orchestra for the finale. Tickets are donation at the door.

The Holiday Season is fast approaching and will be here and gone all within the space of a few weeks. To help ramp up the holiday spirit during the hectic days ahead, Our Common Ground’s music director, Laura Harris, has once again managed to pull together some of this area’s finest musicians to perform in the upcoming Community Christmas Pops Concert. This event will be held at the First Christian Church on Sunday, November 29, beginning at 7 p.m.

Those returning to the Pops Concert stage are: Luke DeJaynes-Fundamental Elements/drums and electric guitar, Brian Grove/string and electric bass, Polly Waddell/violin, Sue Heston/keyboard, Linda Plant/piano and keyboard, Howard Wise/trumpet, Theresa Lindell/acoustic and Laura Harris/piano.

Talented newcomers to the concert, but not to the stage are: Bill Archibald/sax, Cary Eisentraut/drums, Ty Barth/congas and Ryan Thomason, BCCU#2 band director, who will be conducting the orchestra and choir.

The concert includes around an hour of mostly instrumental jazz, blues, gospel, classical, country and more popular Christmas arrangements. Plans are being made to form a Community Mass Choir with orchestra for the finale.

Dirty Roots Revolution Founder/Director Ryan Mifflin will act as Master of Ceremonies. Dirty Roots Revolution is a local grass roots organization formed to encourage people to look at the world around us and say ,“I can do my part.” It's belief is that one person may not be able to change the world, but he or she can impact the life of one other person very easily. It's mission is to provide avenues to reach out to others in need of help. A large focus has recently been in befriending and helping the homeless.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted with proceeds going to Dirty Roots Revolution.

A spoof on the Mac and PC commercials that takes a violent turn. A comedy that comments on the role of technology in our society today.

James' first full-length play NEVER TELL was produced by Broken Watch Theatre Company in August 2006 and was published by Playscripts Inc. in April 2007. His latest full-length LOVE AND COMMUNICATION, was presented at Northern Kentucky University’s YES Festival in spring 2009. Other short plays include CREEP, which won the Actors Theater of Louisville's Heideman Award for best short play in 2001, has been published in multiple anthologies and produced throughout the U.S. and Canada. A western melodrama set (where else?) above a saloon. When Clara married her dream man one afternoon she never expected to be gambled away that evening at a poker game. Hilarity ensues as Clara and the Gambler discover that they've both been bamboozled.

We have Eleanor Pennington, Lynn Reznick, and Lorraine White in the Old Firehouse Emporium.

We have Keith Buchholz, Mary Ratcliff Harnetiaux and a group of ex-patriots coming home to show in the Northcott House, with music and entertainment by Stephanie Plant.

And in the Bradford Community Building we have demonstrations by Mississippi Mud Pottery, weaving by Craig and Carolyn Hart of Vandalia, tatting by Mark Myers and maybe more.

The evening will begin with carolers (Greenville High School Choir) as well as Santa and his reindeer, in a procession around the square to light the shop windows and a large Christmas tree on the courthouse lawn. After the lighting ceremony, the Trolley will begin running up and down 2nd and 3rd Streets, stopping to let passengers off at the various venues. Boxes will be available to collect canned goods for the food pantry. Please bring something to share.

The Boy Scouts in Greenville and Bond County will be "Scouting for Food"November 8-15. They will be dropping off bags on Saturday November 8th and then picking up the filled bags and delivering them to the Bond CountySenior Center on November 15.

Please watch for the bags on your doorstepand fill them with food to help your community get through the winter.

Scouting For Food is the nation's largest one-day food drive, raising a large percentage of area food pantries' yearly supply and feeding the hungry in our community.

Liz Kious made her first cake when she saw one in a magazine and decided to try and duplicate it. She has been making cakes ever since. After being delighted by her first try, she continued making cakes for her children’s birthday’s, family events this led to people to asking her to make cakes for their special events.

Living in Louisville, Kentucky, at the time, she became an apprentice cakemaker for two years at "A Piece of Cake," and then struck out on her own. She ran a successful business in Louisville for six years and then moved to Greenville

Once she adjusted to her new environment, she started the process over again and has reach a point in her business that she felt it was possible and advantageous to open a storefront.

“Sweetest Things” is the result of that effort. It is located at 208 S. 2nd Street. Liz not only makes beautiful wedding cakes and special occasion cakes, but she offers her own chocolates, coffee mixes, flavored popcorns, and cookies as well. She is adding a quick and easy “to go” lunch that consists of two types of “wrap” sandwiches, a side and a drink. The wraps will change every couple of days. We are happy to welcome Liz to our “Main Street”. Please stop by and introduce yourself and buy a treat!
